Jagora University has adopted international standard in credits calculation and credits award to facilitate credits transfer to other higher learning institutions.
The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) was initially set up in 1989 as a pilot scheme within the framework of the Erasmus programme. Its aim at that time was to facilitate the recognition of study periods undertaken abroad by mobile students through the transfer of credits. As a transfer system ECTS has expanded to over many countries and has been introduced in thousand of higher education institutions.
The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a tool of the European Higher Education Area for making studies and courses more transparent.
ECTS is a decentralized system based on the principle of mutual trust among the participating higher education institutions. The rules of ECTS, concerning Information on courses available, Learning Agreement between the home and host institutions and the Use of ECTS Credits, are set out to reinforce this mutual trust.
ECTS is a credit system based on student workload. Student workload involves lectures, practical work, seminars, and self-study in the library or at home. It includes all the work needed to prepare for continuous assessment and examinations.
To be validated by ECTS an academic year is comprised of 60 ECTS credits, and 30 per semester. No special courses may be set up for ECTS purposes, and all courses should be mainstream courses in the participating institution’s regular curriculum.
ECTS credits are awarded only when the course has been successfully completed and all required examinations have been passed.
The students participating in an exchange program will receive full credit for all academic work successfully carried out at any of the partner institutions and academic credits are transferred from one participating institution to another as long as there is a prior agreement between the institutions involved.
When the students have successfully completed the study program previously agreed upon between the home and the host institution, credit transfer will then take place, and the students will continue the study course at the home institution without any loss of time or credits. If, on the other hand, the students decide to stay at the host institution and to pass their degree there, they may need to adapt their study course to the legal, institutional and departmental rules in the host country, institution and department.
According to the formal cooperation agreement, students will not be required to pay tuition fees at the host institution. They may, however, be required to continue to pay their normal tuition fees to the home institution during the study period abroad. One study period abroad should not last less than three months nor more than one year. For more information about ECTS : http://europa.eu.int/en/comm/dg22/socrates/ects.html
The typical “full course load” at an American university implies 15 U.S. credits per semester, which is equal to 30 ECTS credits at a European university. So, the factor between American and European credits is usually 2, i.e. 1 U.S. credit point equals 2 ECTS credit points
